Programming The Propeller IC

Parallax, well known for its successful Basic Stamp IC, has recently introduced the Propeller: a new microcontroller with a certain difference. It packs no less than eight 32-bit processors (referred to as COGs in Propeller jargon) into a single package with only 40 pins. That design takes genuine simultaneous multiprocessing possible, and the sophisticated internal structure of the device makes it relatively easy to implement video and signal-processing applications. The Propeller can be programmed in assembly language or the high-level Spin language. The processor and the programming tools were developed entirely in-house by Parallax, with the hardware being designed from scratch starting at the transistor level.

The basic idea behind that was to avoid becoming involved in all sorts of patent disputes with other manufacturers. The result is astounding, and for software developers it certainly requires a change in mental gears. The developer’s toolkit from Parallax has a modern USB port for that purpose, but a reasonably simple alternative (illustrated here) is also possible for anyone who prefers to work with the familiar RS232 port. Don’t forget that the Propeller works with a 3.3-V supply voltage.

Metal Detector Based on the TDA0161

These metal detector circuit diagram is based on the TDA0161 monolithic integrated circuit , designed for metallic body detection by detecting the variations in high frequency Eddy current losses. For detecting metals , TDA0161 require an external LC tuned circuit .

Output signal is determined by supply current changes. Independent of supply voltage, this current is high or low according to the presence or the absence of a close metallic object. This metal detector circuit use two LEDs , which offer an visual indication of presence or absence at a metals ,around the coil . To adjust the circuit you need to make sure there is no metal near the coil and then set the fine adjustment to a "Mid position". After that you need to adjust the course adjustment to turn on the LED and , adjust the fine adjustment to turn off the LED.

This detector electronic circuit operates over a wide range input voltage of 4 -35 volts .  If you want you can use other values for the Cx capacitor and for L1 inductor  ( changing this value will affect the frequency oscillation and the detection range ) .

Power Indicator for the Water Softener

This power indicator circuit is intended to be used as an extension for the water softener. It might be easier to just place a LED but it is better to make a rectifier that detects the presence of the 15 kHz signal generated by the 555 IC.

The rectifier is connected at the water softener system with C4 capacitor. D1 and D2 diodes are used to obtain a DC voltage that is filtered by C5 capacitor. This voltage turns ON the FET that lights up the LED. When there is no signal from the oscillator the LED will not glow. D1 and D2 = 1N4148.

Auto Sound Systems are more than meets the Eye

The auto sound systems of today are much more involved and complicated than the simple car stereo and speakers of years long past. Todays sound systems have all kinds of bells and whistles that many us could have only imagined during our younger years. In fact, it is quite possible that many of us did imagine these and those imaginings are how they came to be. One thing you need to do before you even begin to put the auto sound system of your dreams together is learn what kinds of components exist, how they work together, and which ones you really think you need as part of your auto sound system and which components you honestly feel you can live without.

Life is about compromise and most of us will readily admit that we are quite unlikely to ever use all the bells, whistles, and upgrades that are made available to us within our lifetimes. I dont know about you, but my cell phone has features Ive never even gotten around to learning how to use. I know I can use them and I have a subscription to do so, but have never managed to actually get around to watching the news, I find that if I am on my phone the news would be an interruption and if I am in the mood to watch the news, Ill generally find a television and watch on a larger screen.

Our auto sound systems are a lot like this. If you dont do an extensive amount of travel with little ones in your car, it is unlikely that you will need a sound system that allows wireless speakers for the back seat. However if you are putting a good sound system in your family car, this may be a good idea, as we dont always enjoy the same music as our children. I dont know about you, but I can only handle "The Wheels on the Bus" so many times in one car trip. For that reason alone I think the individual headphones are a wonderful idea.

One thing that I have found I cant live without in my auto sound system is an MP3 player. Im literally addicted to audio books and have found that I can subscribe to an online service that allows me to download entire books to my computer and either burn them to a CD or put them on a memory stick to play on my next road trip. It makes the trip seem to go so much more quickly when I have something to occupy my mind rather than switching radio stations on a regular basis in search of a song I enjoy that hasnt been overplayed.

Some people cant live without at least a 6-disc CD changer as part of their auto sound system and others find that XML is the only way to go. Whatever your choice, the thing to remember is that it is your choice. Only you can choose the auto sound system that works best with your tastes and requirements. Only you can decide whether or not you enjoy the sound your sound system provides, and only you can decide which bells and whistles are important and essential and which ones you can live without. It is your money that will pay for the upgrades you desire and your tastes they should please.

Take the time to study not only the music, but also the sound and the components that are available for the sound system you choose. Also pay close attention to what is included in the price you think you are paying. More often than not each component is sold as either an add on or an upgrade so be careful that you arent getting less than you think you are or paying more than you think you will be paying for the auto sound system you choose.

The Metal Detector Circuit

This design has not been called a GOLD detector as this name has been left for the more complex detectors that actually discriminate been gold and other metals. There is an enormous difference between detecting gold and ordinary metals (called base metals). How the detector work? The circuit is an oscillator and the way it keeps oscillating is due to positive feedback. This is the case with all oscillators and the component that provides the feedback is the 1n capacitor between the collector and emitter of the transistor. It may seem unusual that the transistor can be turned on via the emitter to keep it oscillating, but in fact it does not matter if the emitter or base receives a signal as the important factor is THE VOLTAGE DIFFERENCE between these two terminals.


If the base is kept fixed and the emitter voltage is reduced, the transistor sees a higher voltage between the base and emitter and it is turned ON harder. If the voltage on the emitter increases, the transistor turns OFF as the difference between the two is reduced. This is exactly what happens in this circuit. The 1n capacitor between the collector and emitter influences the voltage on the emitter to turn the transistor on and off. It does this by constantly monitoring the voltage on the tuned circuit and passing the change to the emitter. In this project, the TUNED CIRCUIT is the parallel components consisting of the inductor (the search coil) and the 1n capacitor across it. This is called an LC circuit in which the L is the inductance of the inductor in Henries (or mH or uH) and C is the capacitance of the capacitor in Farads (or uF or nF or pF). We start when the transistor turns ON and allows a pulse of energy to enter the tuned circuit (later you will see how the transistor turns on). The pulse of energy (current) starts by trying to entering both the coil and capacitor. You would think the coil has the smallest resistance but the capacitor is uncharged and presents a theoretical zero resistance and begins to charge. When a small voltage appears across it, you would think the coil would become the least resistance as it consists of only a few turns of copper wire.
